Embrace the Stretch: the Art of Unlearning

Have you ever tried helping a middle school student with math only to hear, "We don't do it that way anymore?" Suddenly, the method you used successfully for decades seems outdated. The old way still works for you, but if you want to help them grow, you must be willing to learn a new approach.
Life often works that way.
We naturally cling to what is familiar. Routines provide comfort, but growth requires change. God rarely leaves us where we are. He stretches our thinking, our faith, our character, and our dependence on Him. He is preparing us for what lies ahead and stretching is rarely comfortable.
Athletes understand this well. Stretching happens through a series of intentional movements, not one effortless motion. It can be uncomfortable, even painful, especially when muscles are tired. However, the temporary discomfort results in greater strength, flexibility, and endurance.
Many of us are being stretched mentally, physically, financially, and/or relationally. We may feel as though we have reached our limit, but God often uses these seasons to increase our capacity.
Jabez understood capacity. He was named Jabez because his mother associated his birth with pain. There is little mentioned about Jabez’s life or the pain he may have experienced, but his prayer had passion: "Oh, that You would bless me indeed and enlarge my territory that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!" (1 Chronicles 4:10, NKJV)
Jabez asked for God’s blessing, which is to be with God. Jabez desired not to do evil or cause others pain. Instead, he asked God to enlarge his territory, his capacity. He trusted God's hand to sustain him through the stretching and prepare him for greater responsibility.
In contrast, the children of Israel provide a different example. Their forty-year journey in the wilderness was marked by resistance and disobedience to God. Instead of embracing God's leading, they repeatedly longed for Egypt, a place of familiarity and captivity. Their unwillingness to let go of the old ways delayed their journey into the promises God had prepared for them.
Growth requires surrendering and removing anything that separates you from God because He cannot expand what we refuse to release.
If we desire stronger families, healthier relationships, greater influence, or deeper faith we must allow God to stretch us beyond our comfort zones. His stretching is designed to cut away unfruitful branches in our lives. He prunes us so we can produce more fruit of righteousness. As we rely on Him, He increases our capacity to endure and grow.
We naturally desire to avoid the stretching instead of trusting the One who is doing the stretching. Let God transform you as you take your next faithful step. What is God asking you to unlearn today?
Perhaps it is an unhealthy attitude, a limiting mindset, destructive habits, misaligned priorities, or paralyzing fear that has kept you stuck.
The stretching you are experiencing today may be God's way of preparing you for the territory He has already planned for your tomorrow.
Growth rarely happens within the boundaries of what is comfortable.
God often expands our capacity by inviting us to release familiar patterns, trust His leading, and take the next faithful step. The stretching may feel uncomfortable, but it is never without purpose. As we surrender what no longer serves His will, He prepares us for the greater responsibilities, deeper faith, and lasting fruit that lie ahead.
Take a moment to reflect:
What is God asking you to unlearn today, and what might He be preparing you to embrace through this season of stretching?
