A Leader's Sensitivity - Weathering Disappointments

Updated: Aug 15

Fireworks are a family tradition in our home. Every July 4th and New Year’s Eve, we make it a point to let our son enjoy the spectacle. Since his first show, he has been mesmerized with them. As a mother, I was mesmerized with his face watching the display. The dazzling lights, the crackle in the sky is one of those experiences that signal excitement, but this last trip did not go as planned.

We arrived early with anticipation bubbling. Then came the clouds and the skies opened up. Not a drizzle, but a full-on thunderstorm. No fireworks, no grand finale just rain coming down. Some people dashed for shelter, frustrated and dripping wet. We chose a different route.

As the storm subsided, we decided to walk through the rain rather than sulk about it.

It was just rain, a temporary inconvenience not a tragedy. So, we strolled along the riverwalk watching the rain dance across the water while others huddled in dismay beneath the covered spaces. We were drenched too but laughed as puddles soaked our shoes. People may have looked at us like we were crazy…no, my friend. We were free to enjoy that moment despite the storm. It could not take our praise. Our family walk became an unforgettable moment of choices, perspectives, and freedom. It was an unexpected plot twist.

I knew my son wanted to see fireworks and later on, I talked with him about his disappointment. As parent-leaders, it is important to have tough conversations that help others manage setbacks and letdowns. With proper guidance, these are opportunities for growth and gratitude. Gratitude does not dismiss the hurt or disappointment, but it refocuses our attention while expecting better days ahead.  I explained, “Sometimes things do not work out how we plan but that does not mean it has to ruin everything. We can make new plans and create grander outcomes.”

No fireworks, no dazzling light display but all was not lost. We still gave thanks for what was good: being together, having a safe place to stay, and the surprise of finding so much humor during the storm. That evening was made sweeter when it turned into a tender, family moment with brownies and ice cream. It would not have happened if we let the storm steal our joy and distract us from our purpose.

Wait…it gets better…the next morning?

The sun rose again! We spent time at one of the most beautiful beaches. Blue skies. Warm waters. Gentle breeze. A stark contrast from the weather just a day before. When storms arise in life, we have to keep pressing to experience the beauty afterwards.

That’s life—and leadership.

Culture points people toward the spectacular, but leaders know life happens in moments that are translated into meaningful stories impacting our families, employees, and community. In these precious moments, leaders make lasting memories.
